Our Plenary Speaker: Ms. Joan McCormack But I can’t learn by myself – I need the teacher to tell me what to do… Fostering learner independence and critical thinking on an EAP course 21st century universities expect students to be able to work independently, and demonstrate critical thinking skills. Many of our international students come from a cultural and academic background where neither of these are pre-requisites within the academic environment. This plenary will consider what is involved in being autonomous, and being able to think critically, looking at the kind of approach practitioners need to take in fostering the development of these skills. It will also investigate the extent to which learner attitude influences the development of learner autonomy. |
